Engineers and Writers: How to Improve Website Visibility

Improve Alexa Ranking

Engineers love statistics. How about a mystery book where the mystery is solved through a maze of statistics... Now there's an idea! It is highly recommend that the engineer who wants to learn to write should begin a blog. It is an ideal place to begin the writing process, and to use statistics to your advantage.

Alexa

Getting back to statistics, all writers want to be read and if your blog or website is rated very poor on Alexa then it's like being on an island in the Pacific waiting for messages in bottles. It's difficult to tell what constitutes a "good" Alexa rating but here is a ballpark figure using the above metaphor and rounded figures:

30,000,000 or more: you're on the island and there's no hope of getting off it.10,000,000 or more: you're on the island and a message in a bottle washes up on shore.1,000,000 or more: a rescue plane flies overhead.500,000 or more: you are rescued!100,000 or more: you are declared a hero!10,000 or more: a wealthy sailor is sympathetic and rewards you with a million $.1,000 or more: your phone rings off the hook.1: you are Facebook!

There must be enterprising engineers out there who can do a better job than this, but you get the picture.

Alexa Tips

After discovering "hits and misses" and perusing the internet, here is a list of activities that seem to improve (lower) Alexa ratings:

1. Your most important task is to write quality posts in a well-organized and simple blog or website (less is better).

2. If your blog has a message that resonates with your readers then you are automatically "off the island."

3. Submit your articles (Posts) to Ezines (i.e. ezine.com, goarticles.com).

4. Try to get your articles on such social bookmarking sites such as Digg, Delicious, or Stumble Upon.

5. Optimize your site by using relevant "key words" and "Tags."

6. Socialize: join a forum, use Facebook, Twitter, etc.; do interviews. You get the picture. Having links into your site or blog is critical.

7. Download plug-ins or widgets to improve SEO (Google: Search Engine Optimization).

8. It's been noted that installing the Alexa tool bar will improve your ranking. Installing an Alexa widget in your sidebar or footer is another option.

Google analytics

After you get your website or blog running on jet fuel and your Alexa rating is good, you'll want to start looking at statistics for demographics such as # of visitors, locations, languages and a slew of other data points. A great place to do this is at Google Analytics
