"How to increase website traffic?" This could be the most helpful question you could ask yourself if you are building a business online. As we all know it, website traffic is the lifeblood of any internet related business. No traffic means no visits, and therefore less people will know about what your service or product is all about.
Fortunately, there are tons of ways on how to increase website traffic. It's only a matter of implementing them, and how much time, effort, dedication or money do you want to spend. You may be taken aback why I mentioned the word 'money' here. I will explain this part later.
The two main types of website traffic
There are two main types of website traffic. One is free traffic, the other is paid traffic. Each one has its pros and cons. Free traffic is of course, free, but time-consuming, laborious at times, unpredictable and getting website traffic can take quite a long time. But then again this is free traffic generation and you cannot lose anything.
Now if you have enough money to spend in advertising your website, you can go for paid traffic. Hence, the 'money' in the paragraph above.
Paid traffic generation can be very effective and can get you lots of targeted visitors instantly. There is no need for search engine optimization, no need to get glued in front of your computer all day long and you can get very good traffic almost immediately. You just need to create an account with an advertising company, set up a campaign, and the advertising company will do the rest.
Free Traffic
If you are an online marketer starting up your web business with very little budget, you may want to increase website traffic by following the free route. Yes, getting website traffic is very much possible by using free traffic sources such as social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. Especially in Facebook, you can create a Fan Page dedicated to whatever you promote online.
Other important free traffic sources include classified ads websites like Craigslist, Yahoo Classifieds, Squidoo, etc. These websites are surprisingly ranking high in Alexa.com, so it also means that a lot of people are going there to search for something they need --- and this might be your product or service.
Another free traffic generation technique includes article marketing - where you create a key-word rich article and submit them for free to article directories like Ezinearticles.com. The idea is to link your website or blog to this article that you submit, together with the right keywords, and search engines will do the rest. It's like linking your 'unknown website' to a more popular website so you can get an online presence.
Other free traffic sources include submitting your links to social bookmarking sites like Digg.com or Reddit, where the idea is, it's like letting the whole web know that you've done something, and this could be seen by other internet users as well.
You could also participate in similar niche forums where you can create a signature that bears your website link, and posting videos in Youtube.com then placing your link at the description section. If the reader or viewer will like your video, or find your post helpful (in case of forums), mostly likely, they will click your link and be redirected to your website.
Also, bloggers use SEO a lot (Search Engine Optimization), where they use proper keywords and install plugins dedicated to search engine optimization in order for their sites to rank high at search engine results pages. This entails some research needed but certainly you can do this too.
Paid Traffic
Getting website traffic through paid advertising can be viewed more like a business with expenses and profit. The expenses come from buying advertisements for traffic generation, while the profits come from the sales you were able to generate (be it from purchase of a product or service) as a result of traffic to your website.
Paid traffic does not necessarily mean paying expensive money, but there are a lots of advertising companies you can go to that charge only pennies for each traffic that they generate for your website. And this is targeted traffic, which means that your ad is going to appear right at the computer screen of your prospect that might be interested in your product or service.
One classic example of paid traffic is PPC (Pay-per-click). The concept of PPC is simple. You pay only for the number of clicks to your advertisement, which is pretty cool. If you are new to online marketing, you may or you may not be aware of this, but the text ads you see in every page of Google, Yahoo or MSN are all pay-per-click ads. Somebody paid in order for those ads to show up on the pages that you browse.
Another classic example is the use of banner ads. Images that appear on your computer screen are most likely banners, and they come in different sizes and formats. Unlike PPC, most banner advertising companies sell banner impressions by bulk. For example, you can buy 100,000 banner impressions for $50 - that is, one impression is equal to one view of your banner. If they click on your banner, they will be redirected to your website.
Still, another way on how to increase website traffic is the use of e-mail marketing. This technique is hugely popular to online marketers as it allows them to advertise using just one e-mail, to be sent out to thousands of people, sometimes even to hundreds of thousands at a time. The goal of this traffic generation technique is to get the prospect to actually read your e-mail and this is done by creating an interesting subject line. When the reader clicks on the link inside your e-mail, they will be redirected to your website.
Conclusion
These traffic generation techniques, either paid or free, are actionable and can be very successful if done correctly. The web traffic generation sources listed in here are just very few. While there are still a lot of traffic generation techniques out there, as on internet marketer, traffic generation is an all-important skill that needs to be learned. But once you learn how to generate website traffic, you will always have this skill and your profits and will surely soar.
